1

Explore the Old Town

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Old Town of Vilnius is home to some very old buildings, some of which were built in the 13th century. The winding streets are lined with buildings of baroque, gothic and renaissance architecture. Numerous cafés invite you to take a break and enjoy a delicious, refreshing or comforting meal.

2

Visit the cathedral and churches

Built in the 18th century on the remains of an older building, the Vilnius Cathedral has a neoclassical architecture and houses some remarkable works, such as the silver sarcophagus of King Casimir, weighing 600 kilos. There are also many churches in Vilnius, such as the Gothic St. Anne's Church and the Baroque St. Peter and Paul's Church.

3

Go to museums in Vilnius

Lithuania's capital has many museums. The Museum of the Victims of Genocide, housed in a building that served as the KGB headquarters during the Cold War, is a poignant testimony to the recent past. The National Museum of Lithuania has remarkable collections on the history and culture of the country. More unusual, the Museum of Illusions offers surprising optical illusions.

4

Take a trip to Trakai

Less than 30 kilometres west of Vilnius, the Trakai region is famous for its lakes and green landscapes. Trakai Castle, built on an island in Lake Galvė in the 13th and 14th centuries, once had a strategic military function. Today, this powerful mediaeval fortress has been fully restored and is open to visitors as a testament to the skills of its builders.

5

Reaching the Gediminas Tower

The tower is the last remaining part of the old Vilnius Castle, built on a high point in the late Middle Ages. Now a museum, it is named after a famous historical figure in Vilnius: Gediminas, who became Grand Duke of Lithuania in 1316. You can reach the top of the hill on foot, or take the funicular railway to enjoy the spectacular view.
