Renowned for its thermal baths and prized dates, Biskra stands as the gateway to the Sahara.

Founded beside a spring, Biskra has for centuries been an essential stop for desert traders. Once marking the boundary of the Roman Empire, it transformed into a significant commercial hub in the Middle Ages. Dubbed the Queen of the Zibans, in homage to the oasis cluster it presides over, Biskra flourished through trade and date farming.

Discover oases of tranquillity in the Landon Garden or the Deglet Nour palm groves, visit the Moudjahid Museum, dive into the warm waters of the Salihine hammam, be captivated by the colours and markets of Biskra, or embarkon a memorable journey through the Saharafollowing in the footsteps of the ancient Chaoui Berber tribes.

Book your flight from Lyon to Biskra now  and set off to discover an authentic Algeria, 400 kilometres southeast of Algiers.

Inaugurated in 1872 by Count Albert Landon de Longeville, Landon Garden spans nearly five hectares and is filled with a variety of exotic species such as acacias, bougainvillaea, hibiscus, jasmine, palm trees, pines, carob trees, and eucalyptus. The Count built a pavilion that served as a meeting place for renowned artists and poets including Oscar Wilde, André Gide, Nasreddine Dinet, Karl Marx, Henri Matisse, and Eugène Fromentin. The shaded paths and numerous water features provide a true oasis of coolness in the heart of Biskra.

It provides relief for rheumatic pains, post-trauma after-effects, gynaecological issues, respiratory ailments, and skin diseases. Exploring the Origins of Islam at Sidi Okba

Located about twenty kilometres southeast of Biskra, the Sidi Okba mosque invites you on a journey back in time. Built in 686, it stands as one of the earliest Islamic structures in the Maghreb and is part of the complex constructed around the tomb of Oqba Ibn Nafaa, a renowned conqueror and governor of the former territory of Ifriqiya. Expanded in the 11th century, the mosque exhibits architecture of remarkable simplicity and undeniable elegance. While the inner sanctum is reserved for worshippers, the courtyard is open to all visitors, except on Fridays.

Visiting the Mausoleum of Sidi Zarzour

Sidi Zarzour is believed to have been a significant mediaeval scholar. Before his passing, he expressed a desire to be buried in a tomb within the riverbed that flows through Biskra. He predicted that this edifice would withstand the occasionally fierce floods of the river. The waters divide around the mausoleum's curved wall, earning the man interred within the moniker "qessam el-ouidane" (the river splitter). Pilgrims still flock daily, and a grand traditional festival is held every December to showcase Biskra's crafts and culture.
