Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Medina of Sfax, established in the 9th century, is encircled by strong fortifications, featuring thirty-four towers and two grand gateways, guarding a maze of narrow passageways, vaults, and charming little squares. In the heart of the medina, the Great Mosque of Sfax, constructed in the 9th century and significantly beautified by the end of the 10th century, boasts a meticulously decorated eastern façade. It features, in particular, two remarkable inscriptions in Kufic script. The imposing square minaret, consisting of two stacked towers and a lantern, is adorned with discs topped with exquisite Kufic writing. From the inner courtyard, you can enjoy a breathtaking view of this tower, standing about fifteen metres tall.

About twelve kilometres south of Sfax lies the ancient Punic and then Roman city of Thyna, its millennia-old ruins standing under Tunisia's blue sky. Archaeological digs have uncovered remnants of fortifications and magnificent mosaics, now displayed at the Sfax museum. The ruins are located by the Mediterranean Sea, in the heart of an ornithological nature reserve that welcomes numerous species of migratory birds in winter.

From Sfax, a ferry takes you to the Kerkennah archipelago. These specks of land, about twenty kilometres from the coast, consist of two main islands connected by a bridge and five smaller islets. Primarily inhabited by fishermen, the archipelago offers a serene haven in the Mediterranean.
