5 reasons to visit Zadar

1

Explore the historic centre

Protected by an intricate system of fortifications, consisting of mighty walls and fortified gates, Zadar's historic quarter bears witness to a history that goes back thousands of years. You can lose yourself in the narrow, cobbled streets of the city centre, stop by the many shops or enjoy a friendly stop for food and drink in one of the many cafés and restaurants.
2

Listen to the sea and see the sun

In Zadar, flights of steps slowly descend into the sea. Designed by Nikola Bašić, they conceal an ingenious system of organ pipes which, under the effect of the waves, create astonishing melodies and allow one to listen to the sea, now a musician. The architect also imagined the Salute to the Sun, an installation of 300 photovoltaic panels that convert the sun's rays into a light show at sunset.
3

Visit the churches of Zadar

Built in the 9th century on the ruins of the ancient Roman forum, the Church of St Donatus remains one of the most impressive religious monuments of its time in Western Europe. The Cathedral of St. Anastasia, a 12th-century Romanesque masterpiece, is the largest in Dalmatia. The Church of St. Chrysogonus, also in Romanesque style, remains the only remnant of a mediaeval Benedictine abbey.

4

Dive in the Adriatic Sea

A few kilometres north of Zadar, the beach of Ninska Laguna offers a large stretch of sand near the small resort of Nin. Zaton beach, also north of Zadar, is popular for its water activities and the quality of its water. Further away, Sakarun beach on the island of Dugi Otok is accessible by boat from Zadar.
5

Treat yourself to a green getaway

Croatia is a sunny country with exceptionally beautiful landscapes, which can be explored on foot, by bike or by car along the back roads. The Paklenica National Park is located a few kilometres north-east of Zadar. Its impressive canyons and breathtaking cliffs make it an exceptional playground for hiking and climbing enthusiasts.
