Macao, the charm of a world between two cultures

When the Portuguese soul meets Chinese energy, a unique journey opens up to you

Perched on the southern coast of China, facing Hong Kong, Macao is a special administrative region with a fascinating past. Former Portuguese colony until 1999, it has managed to preserve a subtle balance between oriental traditions and European heritage. It is often nicknamed 'the Las Vegas of Asia', but it would be unfair to reduce it to its sparkling casinos: Macao is much more than a gaming city. It is a place of contrasts where cobbled streets, Chinese temples, baroque squares and refined restaurants respond in harmony. The visitor discovers an unusual atmosphere, between spirituality, effervescence and sweetness of life, in a setting combining history and modernity.

The flavors of Macanese cuisine, the warm welcome of the inhabitants and the beauty of the panoramas on the sea of China make it an irresistible destination.

Centre historique de Macao
1

Discover the historic center and its Portuguese influences

UNESCO World Heritage Site, the historic center of Macao is a marvel of colonial architecture and oriental elegance. Its cobblestone streets, white churches and arcaded squares remind of the cities of Portugal, while Taoist temples and Chinese markets evoke the local soul. Senate Square, the vibrant heart of the old town, concentrates this cultural duality. A few steps away, the ruins of St. Paul’s Cathedral, emblem of Macao, stand proudly, offering breathtaking views of the city. Strolling here is traveling between two worlds in a few meters.

Fort Guia Macao
2

Climb to Fort Guia to embrace the city with your eyes

Perched on the heights, Guia Fort is home to the oldest lighthouse on the Chinese coast. This walk, accessible on foot, leads to a splendid panorama of the city, the sea and the surrounding islands. It is a place where calm settles, far from the bustle of the casinos. The place exudes history: once a Portuguese defensive bastion, today it symbolizes peaceful coexistence between two civilizations. At sunset, golden tones envelop the city, and Macao reveals itself in all its beauty.

îles de Taipa et Coloane Macao
3

Stroll between the islands of Taipa and Coloane

The islands of Taipa and Coloane, connected to the main peninsula, offer a more tranquil and authentic face of Macao. In Taipa, the old colorful Portuguese mansions are next to charming cafes and restaurants where you can enjoy local pastries. Coloane, for its part, seduces with its fishing village atmosphere, peaceful beaches and shaded hiking trails. Here, we enjoy another rhythm, between nature and seaside, far from the neon lights and noise.

Casinos de Macao
4

Live an evening in the legendary casinos of Macao

It would be impossible to mention Macao without talking about its famous casinos, among the most luxurious in the world. The Venetian, the Grand Lisboa or the Galaxy offer grandiose shows, sumptuous decorations and an effervescent atmosphere. Even without playing, it is fascinating to observe the architecture and staging inspired by the great capitals of the world. Shows, shops and gourmet restaurants extend the magic until late at night.

Gastronomie macanaise
5

Tasting the Macanese gastronomy, between East and West

In Macao, the cuisine tells the whole story of the place. It is a tasty mix of Portuguese, Chinese and Asian traditions. Here you can taste the famous 'minchi' (ground meat dish with spices), the 'bacalhau' à la portugaise, dim sum, or even the famous golden egg tarts. The markets are full of sweet scents and spices, and the alleys are home to countless small gourmet shops. To taste the local cuisine is to taste the very identity of Macao, between sweetness and character.

Do I need a visa to travel to Macao from France?

French nationals do not need a visa for a stay of less than 90 days. You will simply need to present a passport valid for at least six months after the date of entry. If you plan to pass through Hong Kong or mainland China, be sure to check the specific entry requirements for these territories as they differ from those of Macau.

Where to stay in Macao: in the old town or on Cotai?

The old town, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, will appeal to history and culture lovers with its colonial alleys and small pensions. The Cotai district, nicknamed the 'Las Vegas of Asia', is home to large casino hotels, shopping centers and ultra-modern complexes.
