La Coruna

La Coruna live from Lyon

Heading to the Galician Atlantic: urban energy facing the ocean

In the north-west of Spain, in Galicia, the coastal town of A Coruña (La Coruna) blends maritime and cosmopolitan spirits at the end of a peninsula whipped by the Atlantic. Sometimes nicknamed the "glass city" for its glazed galleries that sparkle facing the sea, it offers an elegant postcard of modernist facades, urban beaches and panoramic promenades. Land of strong identity, Galicia cultivates its double soul Celtic and Hispanic, and A Coruña is one of the showcases: we come for its marine gastronomy (seafood, pulpo a feira), its museums and lively places, its waves for surfing and its Roman lighthouse unique in the world, the Tower of Hercules, classified by UNESCO. Between culture, nature and saline lifestyle, A Coruña is the promise of an exotic and tonic city break, within reach from Lyon.

La Coruna
1

The Tower of Hercules, eternal emblem

Facing the winds of the Atlantic stands the Tower of Hercules, a Roman lighthouse from the 1st-2nd century and the oldest lighthouse still in activity. Restored in the 18th century, it rises to 55 m on a promontory of 57 m, watches over the port for two millennia and unfolds at its feet a sculpture park open to the ocean. Climb its steps: the view sweeps over the Galician coast, the city and the urban beaches. A UNESCO World Heritage site (2009), both an engineering monument and a living myth.

The maritime promenade, from beaches to "glass"

From the marina to the beaches of Riazor and Orzán, the paseo runs several kilometers along the seafront. Here, joggers, cyclists and walkers meet surfers and families, while the galleries, the glazed balconies that have earned A Coruña its nickname "glass city", reflect the changing sky. At the end of the afternoon, the low light gilds the facades, the terraces come to life, and we understand why the city has the reputation of being one of the liveliest in Galicia.

The Old City and the place Maria Pita

Lose yourself in the Ciudad Vieja, historic heart with its maze of cobbled streets, small squares and discreet churches. The plaza de María Pita, lined with arcades and the majestic ayuntamiento, is the natural theater of local life: cafes overflowing on the terrace, street music, markets and parties. From there, radiate towards museums, galleries and artisan shops. Between medieval heritage and modernity, the coruñesa soul is lived in the open air, to the rhythm of the sea breeze

Atlantic flavors: from the market to the marisquería

In La Coruna, the sea is on the plate. In the marissings, taste oysters, scallops, coquilles and fish of the day; in the bars, tapas celebrate pulpo a feira and high-end canned food. The local market fascinates with the freshness and diversity of products, reflecting a culinary culture focused on the Atlantic. Water it all with an Albariño from Rías Baixas or a Godello: Galicia is as much to savour as it is to contemplate.

Galician escapades: cliffs, trails and Santiago

Take advantage of a week on site to widen the horizon: the coast up to Monte de San Pedro offers spectacular panoramas of the city and the Tower. Further on, coastal paths, wind-beaten capes and small coves punctuate the Costa da Morte; inland, the spiritual beauty of Santiago de Compostela is only about an hour and a half away, perfect for a day of art and history. Each detour reveals another facet of Galicia: green, oceanic, contemplative

FAQ: Flights Lyon - La Coruna

At what period to leave?

Mild oceanic climate all year round, spring and summer being the most pleasant seasons to combine coastal walks and beach; autumn-winter brings more waves and swell, superb for lovers of maritime atmospheres. The high season (July-August) sees more crowds on urban beaches; the off-seasons offer a lively but calmer city, with often more flexible rates. Check the weather before leaving: the weather changes quickly on the Atlantic

What to do in one week ?

Spend two days in A Coruña: Tower of Hercules at sunrise or sunset, maritime promenade, beaches of Riazor and Orzán, Ciudad Vieja and tapas on the plaza de María Pita. Plan a nature day at Monte de San Pedro and along the coast to the cliffs. Add an excursion to Santiago de Compostela for its cathedral and museums. If you rent a car, head to the Costa da Morte (fishing villages, coastal paths) and finish with a seafood tasting in a marisquería

How can I get from the city center to the Hercules Tower easily?

The tower of Hercules is located about 3km from the center of La Coruna. You can access it by urban bus (regular lines from Plaza de María Pita), by taxi or on foot via the maritime promenade that runs along the coast. The walk is very pleasant and offers spectacular views of the Atlantic.
