Oman, the ideal destination for a desert road trip

Oman is one of the most surprising destinations in the Middle East. The country boasts perfectly maintained roads, spectacular scenery and a wide variety of landscapes. From rugged mountains to lush oases and vast expanses of sand, every kilometre holds its own share of discoveries.

To make the most of this adventure, plan a 7 to 10 day itinerary. The best time to visit is from October to April, when temperatures generally range between 20 and 30 °C. A 4x4 vehicle is recommended for certain sections through the dunes and more remote areas.

Step 1: Muscat, the gateway to adventure

Your road trip begins in Muscat, the capital of Oman. Situated on the Gulf of Oman, the city charms visitors with its blend of modernity and tradition. Take the time to visit the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque and the bustling Muttrah Market before setting off.

This first stop also gives you a chance to soak up the country’s atmosphere. The white houses, the arid mountains surrounding the city and the spectacular coastline offer a first glimpse of the landscapes that lie ahead. Spending a night here will help you rest up before tackling the long stretches through the desert.

Step 2: Wadi Bani Khalid, the oasis nestled amongst the mountains

As you leave Muscat and head inland, stop off at Wadi Bani Khalid. This oasis is one of the most famous in Oman thanks to its natural pools of turquoise water surrounded by cliffs and palm trees.

Swimming here is particularly pleasant during the hottest months. After several hours’ drive through desert landscapes, the contrast is striking. This stopover provides an ideal transition between the mountains of the east and the vast sandy expanses of the Wahiba Sands.

Step 3: The Wahiba Sands, the heart of the Omani desert

The Wahiba Sands are the most iconic feature of Oman’s desert. Here, the dunes can rise to over 100 metres in height and stretch as far as the eye can see. The shades of sand change throughout the day, offering spectacular views at sunrise and sunset.
Spend at least one night in a traditional camp amongst the dunes. Far from any light pollution, the sky reveals an extraordinary display of stars. 4x4 excursions, camel rides and encounters with the Bedouins make this stopover particularly memorable.

Step 4: Al Khaluf and the White Desert

Although less well known than the Wahiba Sands, the white desert of Al Khaluf is nonetheless one of the country’s most astonishing natural sites. Vast ivory-coloured dunes meet the turquoise waters of the Arabian Sea in an almost surreal setting.

This stretch of the Omani coastline remains largely untouched by mass tourism. Travellers seeking wide open spaces appreciate the sense of seclusion and the raw beauty of the landscapes. Photographers will find some of the country’s most stunning panoramas here.

Étape 5 : Nizwa, histoire et traditions omanaises

To round off your road trip, head to Nizwa, the former capital of the sultanate. Its imposing fort overlooks a lush oasis surrounded by mountains. The town is also renowned for its traditional souk, where you can discover local crafts, spices and traditional produce.

This stop adds a cultural dimension to the journey. After several days spent in the desert, it offers a deeper understanding of Oman’s history and traditions. It is also an excellent starting point for exploring the Hajar Mountains before heading back to Muscat.
