Ushuaia, at the end of the world !

Between fjords, subantarctic forests and the winds of the Beagle Channel

Nestled in the extreme south of the American continent, in Argentina, in the region of Tierra del Fuego (Patagonia), Ushuaia is the city that proudly embraces itself as "the end of the world". Its port opens the way to Antarctica, its snow-capped mountains embrace the bay, and its lengas forests plunge into waters where sea lions, cormorants, and penguins play. People come here for its untouched nature, its unique coastal parks, its history as a penitentiary now told by the Train of the End of the World, and a surprising gastronomy, centolla and southern hake in mind. Between hiking to the Martial glacier, cruising on the Beagle channel and panoramas of the bay of Ushuaia, the atmosphere is one of gentle adventure, in the open air, with changing lights.

Tierra del fuego
1

Tierra del Fuego National Park: the park where the sea meets the mountain

At a few kilometers from the city, the national park of Tierra del Fuego concentrates lagoons, peat bogs, forests and marine shores, a rarity in Argentina. We walk on bridges swept by salt, we watch for the oystercatcher and the meadowlark, we reach the photogenic Lapataia Bay where the mythical Route 3 stops and where we measure the Patagonian immensity that begins. The well-marked trails, from Senda Costera to the viewpoints on Lake Acigami, offer accessible or more sporty walks according to the desire. It is the perfect place to breathe in the 'great South', before returning to Ushuaia by the edge of the lengas forests

canal Beagle
2

Navigate the Beagle Channel: lighthouses, seal colonies, and penguins

Embark from the tourist dock of Ushuaia for a cruise that unfolds the postcard of the Beagle: Bird Island, Wolf Island, the lighthouse Les Éclaireurs, the Andean silhouettes, and, in season, the penguins of Martillo Island. The show is alive: seals with one and two manes, imperial cormorants, albatrosses and sometimes dolphins accompany the boat. The outings last from 3 to 6 hours depending on the itinerary, with daily departures and a port fee to be paid at the dock. An extended navigation to the penguins is proposed from October to April, ideal time to observe the colony.

Glacier Martial
3

Martial Glacier: the iconic hike over the bay

Only 7 km from the center, the Martial Glacier offers a full-scale playground for half a day of effort and grandiose views. Several trails wind through the reserve: "bosque" course, panoramic crests, and approach to the glacial front, with striking views of the city and the Beagle Channel. In summer, hiking is accessible to all with more sustained passages; in winter, the site lends itself to snow activities (snowshoeing, children’s skiing) in a setting of spruce trees and frozen waterfalls. A gourmet break at the refuge completes this very 'Ushuaia' climb.

Train
4

The Train of the End of the World: a journey through history

Rehabilitated in 1994, this small steam train brings back to life the last kilometers of the "prisoners' train" which, at the beginning of the 20th century, transported wood from the Susana mountain to the penitentiary of Ushuaia. Wagons with large bays, multilingual audio, stop at the La Macarena waterfall and terminus in the heart of the national park: the ride (  1 hour round trip, 45 minutes return) is as much heritage as landscape. Tickets can be bought at the station 8 km from the city, or online; the entrance to the park is not included. It is a unique way to approach the memory of the end of the world with style.

Symbole Ushuaia
5

The southernmost city, where everything begins

Ushuaia claims its nickname, Fin del Mundo, with a sense of symbolism that can be read on its signs, museums and port become the embarkation gate to Antarctica. This identity was born from its extreme position, its history as a penal colony and its intimate relationship with the Beagle Channel. Today, it attracts travelers for the raw beauty of its landscapes and the thrill of being at the "last" shore of the Southern Hemisphere.
