Paderborn, medieval heart of Germany

Sources of the Pader, millennial cathedral and high tech museums

In the centre west of Europe, in Germany, the town of Paderborn is nestled in North Rhine-Westphalia, where a singular river flows: the Pader, fed by dozens of springs at the foot of the cathedral. Paderborn combines a remarkably well-preserved medieval heritage with an imperial palace, narrow streets, half-timbered houses and an astonishing passion for innovation, illustrated by the Heinz Nixdorf MuseumsForum, presented as the largest computer museum in the world. People come here for the large Romanesque-Gothic cathedral and its high bell tower, for the Schloss Neuhaus and its baroque gardens, for the museums and the conviviality of the cafés around the springs of the Pader. A sweet and cultural getaway, both historical and high-tech, within reach of wings from Lyon.

The cathedral of Paderborn, stone icon

In the center of the city stands the Fs Paderborn cathedral, dedicated to Mary, St. Killian and St. Liborius. Its architecture mixes Romanesque and Gothic, with a western tower of 93 m and an interior rich in medieval works. Guided tours are offered to explore the religious and artistic history of the diocese through chapels, crypts and sculpted portals. Upon leaving, let yourself be surprised by the springs that spring up at the foot of the walls and nourish the river.

Le Heinz Nixdorf MuseumsForum, the tech in large format

Housed in the former premises of Nixdorf Computer AG, the Heinz Nixdorf MuseumsForum (HNF) traces five millennia of information and communication, from Mesopotamian writing to artificial intelligence and robotics. Interactive exhibitions, prototypes and mythical machines make this museum a major step for curious and technology enthusiasts. An exciting contrast with medieval heritage, which tells the evolution of ideas and tools

Schloss Neuhaus : baroque gardens and green promenade

A few kilometres from the centre, Schloss Neuhaus impresses with its Renaissance silhouette and impeccably maintained park. The paths, basins and flower beds make a perfect backdrop for a walk, picnic or photo shoot. The site regularly hosts cultural events, and allows you to breathe between two visits to museums and churches.

Sources of the Pader: the city that springs from the earth

Paderborn was born around the springs of the Pader, a network of resurgences of clear water that rises at the foot of the cathedral. In a few meters, the river takes shape, crosses parks and squares, then escapes towards the Lippe. Following the water’s course is a gentle way to discover the centre, its terraces and museums, and to feel the soul of the city where everything begins.

Wewelsburg : a fortress with three wings

In the surroundings, the Wewelsburg intrigues with its unique triangular plan and its centuries-old history. The visit to the fortress and its museum illuminates the bright and dark hours of the place, and offers views of the Westphalian countryside. An ideal excursion to complete a cultural stay in Paderborn.
