Mucem, the Museum of Civilizations of Europe and the Mediterranean, is Marseille's best-known museum. But the city is also home to a number of other outstanding museums. You can also visit the Musée d'Histoire, the Muséum d'Histoire Naturelle, the Musée des Beaux-Arts, the Centre de la Vieille Charité and the Musée Cantini.
 

To the north of the Old Port, the historic Panier district has become a haven for many craftspeople and shopkeepers. The shops, cafés and workshops invite you to discover a whole host of new things. From the port, you can also walk up the Canebière, or take the pedestrian shopping street, rue Saint-Ferréol. Further south, the Vallon des Auffes has retained the character of a fishing village.

Affectionately nicknamed La Bonne Mère (The Good Mother) by the people of Marseilles, Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde dominates the city. You can easily reach the basilica from the Old Port. Inside, the mosaics and ex-votos offer a unique spectacle. Outside, the view takes in the whole city, the harbour and islands, and the hills of the Calanques, Étoile, Garlaban and Sainte-Baume ranges.

Marseille's signature fish soup, bouillabaisse, is still prepared traditionally in many of the city's restaurants.
