Lesser known islands for a summer away from the crowds

paysage

Other shores, a different pace

When summer arrives, some destinations seem obvious. Sometimes too obvious. Crowded beaches, packed coves, a hectic rhythm… What if true luxury today lay elsewhere?

A little further from the usual routes, there are still preserved islands where time slows down and you rediscover the simple pleasure of untouched landscapes, clear waters, and silence broken only by the wind or the waves.

For those dreaming of a quieter, more authentic summer, here are five lesser known islands, perfect for escaping the crowds.

Vis Island, Croatia

Long closed to tourism, Vis has preserved a rare authenticity in the Adriatic.

Here, there are no large resorts or overcrowded beaches: just stone villages, wild coves, and a deep blue sea. The island is best explored slowly, between morning swims and simple dinners overlooking the sunset.

São Jorge, Açores (Portugal)

Slim and lush, São Jorge is an island with a strong character, shaped by volcanic cliffs.

The fajãs, small coastal plains nestled at the foot of the mountains, offer landscapes found nowhere else in the world. Hiking, ocean views, and a sense of infinite space make it an island that must be earned, and one that leaves a lasting impression.

Isla Holbox, Mexico

North of the Yucatán, Holbox is an island with almost no roads. White sand, no large buildings, and a bohemian atmosphere: here, people get around by bike or electric cart.

Between quiet beaches, lagoons, and spectacular sunsets, Holbox reveals a different side of Mexico, more peaceful and more contemplative.

La Maddalena Island, Italy

Off the coast of Sardinia, the La Maddalena archipelago is still a hidden treasure.

Its tropical looking beaches and crystal clear waters contrast with the tranquility of its small harbors and natural trails. An ideal destination for those who love Italy… without the summer crowds.

Læsø, Denmark

Less well known than the islands of southern Europe, Læsø offers an unexpected Nordic escape.

Wild dunes, long beaches, and houses topped with dried seaweed create a raw yet poetic setting. Summer here is mild and bright, perfect for long walks and complete disconnection.
