Why choose Cape Verde for a road trip?

Just a few hours’ flight from Europe, Cape Verde offers a fascinating blend of African, Portuguese and Creole influences. This volcanic archipelago, comprising ten islands, boasts an incredibly varied landscape, ranging from golden beaches to rugged mountains, tropical valleys and authentic villages.

To make the most of this diversity, there’s nothing quite like a road trip. In Cape Verde, adventures are often planned by combining a car, an ‘aluguer’ (shared taxi), a ferry or a domestic flight. The best time to visit is from November to June, when the weather is dry and temperatures generally range between 22 and 28 °C. A 10- to 15-day trip allows you to discover the archipelago’s finest features at a leisurely pace.

Step 1: Santiago, the historic heart of Cape Verde

Begin your adventure on Santiago, the largest island in the archipelago. This is where you’ll find Praia, the capital, the ideal gateway to exploring Cape Verdean culture. The bustling markets, the ever-present music and the Creole flavours offer an immediate immersion in local life.

Don’t miss Cidade Velha, the former capital and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. With its fortifications, cobbled streets and colonial ruins, this site tells the story of the early chapters of Cape Verde’s history. The coastal landscapes surrounding the town add to the charm of the visit.

Finally, head to the Serra Malagueta Natural Park. The volcanic landscapes and panoramic ocean views reveal a wilder side of Santiago. It’s an excellent introduction to the geographical contrasts that make the country so rich and diverse.

Step 2: Fogo, at the heart of the volcano

From Santiago, head to the island of Fogo, dominated by the imposing Pico do Fogo, Cape Verde’s highest peak at nearly 2,829 metres. As soon as you arrive, the black lava-covered land contrasts with the deep blue of the Atlantic.

The road leading to Chã das Caldeiras winds through striking landscapes. This village, nestled at the foot of the volcano, seems to exist outside the flow of time. The locals even grow vines on volcanic soil, producing wines that are unique to the region.

The ascent of Pico do Fogo is one of the highlights of the trip. The hike offers spectacular views of the caldera and the neighbouring islands. Even for those who do not climb to the summit, the volcanic landscape remains a memorable experience.

Step 3: São Vicente – culture and the good life

Next, head to São Vicente, often regarded as the cultural capital of Cape Verde. Its main town, Mindelo, is renowned for its festive atmosphere, colourful colonial architecture and vibrant music scene.

Stroll along the marina, discover the lively coffee and let yourself be carried away by the rhythms of the morna, made famous worldwide by Cesária Évora. The town is easy to explore on foot and makes an excellent base from which to explore the island.

A few kilometres from Mindelo, the beaches of Laginha and São Pedro offer a more seaside atmosphere. Water sports enthusiasts particularly appreciate the excellent conditions for kitesurfing and windsurfing.

Step 4: Santo Antão, a hiker’s paradise

A short ferry journey from São Vicente takes you to Santo Antão, often regarded as Cape Verde’s most spectacular island. The cobbled roads wind their way through dizzying mountains, deep valleys and villages clinging to the cliffs.

The Paul Valley is one of the archipelago’s gems. Its terraced fields, sugar cane plantations and lush vegetation stand in stark contrast to the desert-like landscapes found on other islands. Every bend in the road reveals a new, breathtaking view.

Hiking enthusiasts will find an exceptional playground here. The coastal paths linking Cruzinha to Ponta do Sol are among the most beautiful in the country and offer an authentic glimpse into Cape Verdean island life.

Step 5: Sal, a relaxing break before heading home

To round off this road trip, head to Sal, the island best known to sun-seeking travellers. Its year-round dry climate and long, white sandy beaches make it the ideal destination to slow down after several days of exploring.

Santa Maria is where most of the action takes place. With its seafood restaurants, idyllic beaches and turquoise waters, the atmosphere is all about relaxation. The sunsets here are particularly spectacular.

Before you leave, take the time to visit the Pedra de Lume salt flats, situated in the crater of an ancient volcano. The high salt concentration makes it easy to float, offering a unique experience in the heart of a stunning landscape.
