Over-sized items and luggage

Where to check in your oversized baggage?

How to check in your over-sized luggage ?

Are you traveling with some big company? No worries, your double bass, golf bag, skis, surfboard, or double stroller will need to be dropped off at the Oversized Baggage service after check-in!

The process for checking in these bags may require extra time compared to a standard bag.

Be sure to allow a little extra time for checking in your over-sized luggage to ensure everything goes smoothly!

Make sure to check with your airline, as they may charge for this service.

About Over-sized luggage

When is luggage considered oversized?

Luggage is considered oversized when it exceeds the standard dimensions or type of items accepted in the hold by airlines.

As a general rule, standard checked baggage must not exceed a total size of 158 cm (length + width + height) and a weight of 23 to 32 kg, depending on the airline.
Anything larger, heavier, or with an unusual shape is classified as oversized baggage.

Examples include:

  • A 2-meter surfboard

  • A bicycle packed in a special travel case

  • Skis or a snowboard over 1.70 m

  • A musical instrument such as a cello or double bass

  • Very large rigid suitcases (over 32 kg or more than 200 cm in total dimensions)

Are there any specific restrictions?

Yes. Oversized baggage is subject to certain safety and packaging rules:

  • They must be properly protected (cover, hard case, or specific packaging).

  • Some items are prohibited (e.g., gas bottles, fuel, explosives, high-capacity lithium batteries).

  • Fragile items are accepted, but their transport is at your own risk.

  • It is recommended to allow approximately 30 extra minutes in addition to your usual arrival time at the airport to allow for the check-in of oversized baggage.

Do the rules vary depending on the airline?

Yes, the rules can vary depending on your airline:

  • Maximum dimensions and weight limits differ.

  • Some airlines include certain sports equipment for free (e.g., skis during winter on some carriers).

  • Others charge a fixed fee for any oversized baggage.

Always check your airline’s baggage policy before departure to avoid unexpected charges.

Puis-je emmener avec moi des objets hors format s’ils sont précieux ?

It depends on the item and its size:

  • Small musical instruments (guitar, violin) can travel in the cabin if they meet carry-on size requirements.

  • Larger instruments (cello, double bass) may sometimes require the purchase of an extra seat on the plane.

  • Sports equipment (skis, golf clubs, surfboards) usually travel in the hold as oversized baggage.

Tip: Indicate when booking that you are carrying a special item to anticipate any necessary formalities.

Qu’en est-il des équipements médicaux ?

Wheelchairs, crutches, walkers, and other medical aids are accepted free of charge by airlines, in addition to your baggage.

  • Electric wheelchairs with batteries require prior notification to ensure compliance with airline safety regulations.

  • Manual equipment (folding wheelchairs, crutches) can be handed over at the gate and collected upon arrival.

  • To travel smoothly, it is highly recommended to inform the airline at least 48 hours before the flight if you require assistance or are carrying specific medical equipment.
