What to do if you lose your passport before traveling ?

React quickly to save your departure

Passeport

A frequent unforeseen event...but not insurmountable

Good habits to avoid the loss of a passport compromising your trip

Losing one’s passport just before flying can become a source of stress. However, this is a more common situation than one might think, and there are simple steps to deal with it.

First of all, thoroughly check your bags, suitcases, pockets, hotel safe or car, because these are the most common places of "false losses".

If the passport is actually lost, it must be declared immediately: in France, this is done at the police station, in the gendarmerie or via the CERFA form n°14011*02, while abroad, the declaration must be made to the local police and then to the French consulate. Once declared, the loss automatically invalidates the passport, making it impossible to travel with this document, even if found later.

Check if the passport is really lost

Before starting the administrative procedures, systematically inspect your personal belongings: handbag, backpack, suitcase, pockets, drawers, between cushions, or even the car. While traveling, also check the belongings of your loved ones and the 'lost property' services if you are in a hotel or an airport. These checks often help avoid unnecessary steps.

Dépôt de dossier

Officially declare the loss

The declaration of loss renders your passport immediately invalid in official systems, preventing any future use of the document.

In France, the procedure is done at the gendarmerie, at the police station or via the CERFA form n°14011*02, then validation at the town hall.

Abroad, you must first report the loss to the local police, then contact the embassy or consulate of France, which will verify your identity and guide you towards the appropriate solution.
